[映画][旧記事] SEE THAT PROVES HOW INTELLIGENT YOU ARE.
『サンシャイン・クリーニング』(Sunshine Cleaning, Christine Jeffs監督，2009年)という映画に次のようなやりとりがある。頑固さがファンキーなおじいちゃんが，孫・オスカーの機転でジャンボサイズのお菓子を小売店に売り込むのに成功した後で。
- Grandpa: That was really something Oscar! That was really terrific! You got the moves, you got the nerve, you’re a real sharp cookie!
- Oscar: No, I’m not. I’m stupid.
- Grandpa: No, you’re not. Why you saying that, why do you say you’re stupid?
- Oscar: It’s true the teachers want to put me in retard class.
- Grandpa: Who wants to put you in retard class?!
- Oscar: The teachers!
- Grandpa: They don’t know how to deal with somebody as intelligent as you are, that’s what the problem is. You’re a very, very smart kid. Do you get bored a lot?
- Oscar: Yeah!
- Grandpa: Do you look out the window?
- Oscar: All the time.
- Grandpa: Well, see that proves how intelligent you are. They should be catering to you, they should be doing something special for you.
- Oscar: You really think so?
- Grandpa: I know so. And on top of that, I think you’re a goddamn genius.
“retard class”は字幕では「特別学級」と訳されているが，かなり軽蔑的。この前後からのやり取り全体が愉快で心温まるのだが，孫の健全さと可能性をハナっから信じて疑わないおじいちゃんの愛に泣ける。なぜか今日，このやり取りを思い出した。
下線部は，「授業中退屈するか？」「うん」「窓の外を見てるか？」「いっつも」「ほら，頭がいい証拠だ」ってな感じ。こういう風に揶揄されている内はまだまだだ。なんせ，今日も，中高の英語の授業が楽しかった覚えがある，という人は3, 4人しかいなかった。
昨日は後期のガイダンスで，一気に大学がにぎやかに。今日は公開講座。学生でも学会員でもないオーディエンスは初体験で， 一人じゃなかったから気分的には楽でしたが， 意外と疲れました。
